Experiencing and understanding Artificial Intelligence – MS Science starts German Tour with Fraunhofer-KI on Board

Whether in medicine, industry or in one’s own household – artificial intelligence (AI) technologies are being used in more and more areas. As Europe’s leading organization for applied research, the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft also focuses on education and broad knowledge transfer when it comes to shaping technological change. At MS Wissenschaft, the Fraunhofer IAIS and the ML2R Experts make artificial intelligence comprehensible in a playful way and show where Machine Learning technologies (ML) play a role in our everyday lives – today and in the future. In the interactive quiz »KIMBA«, passengers test their knowledge of AI concepts, applications and myths – and receive first-hand knowledge from Fraunhofer experts*. From 16 May to the beginning of October, the exhibition ship will be on tour in Germany and then also in Austria.

Whether with the language assistant at home or in the intelligent factory – wherever you look, man and machine move closer together. The professional world, too, is undergoing a change that demands new skills and approaches: In the world of tomorrow, many of today’s schoolchildren will be working in professions that do not yet exist. In order to provide young people in particular with insights into the exciting topic of AI, MS Wissenschaft 2019 is going on a journey into the world of smart technologies in the »Science Year Artificial Intelligence«, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). On 16 May, the floating Science Center started its tour in Berlin in the presence of Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek, from where it will travel to up to 27 cities throughout Germany.

With a multitude of interactive exhibits from research, the hands-on exhibition conveys the opportunities of AI and provides a deeper insight into the technologies behind it. Discover, try out and participate – young and adult guests on board put their AI knowledge to the test and learn in a playful way at two Fraunhofer exhibits.

»KIMBA« – Step by step to become an AI professional

With KIMBA, the interactive quiz on artificial intelligence – myths and basic knowledge, the Fraunhofer Institute for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS and the Competence Center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr ML2R provide a playful and at the same time scientifically sound introduction to the topic of AI. At basic or expert level, two participants compete against each other, learn exciting facts, uncover myths and test their knowledge. Each step is an answer: instead of buzzers, the participants choose their answers with their feet. Touch sensors in the floor make it possible. Whether in the gaming industry, language assistants or industry 4.0, from intelligent emotion recognition to chatbots – KIMBA covers various areas in which AI is used. After each question, Fraunhofer scientists give a closer insight into their working and research world via video – subtitled, of course, with the help of Fraunhofer-KI!

»The quiz encourages children and young people to think about AI themselves and is intended to arouse curiosity about this exciting topic.«, says Prof. Dr. Christian Bauckhage, Lead Scientist for Machine Learning at Fraunhofer IAIS and responsible for ML2R at the University of Bonn, who answers exciting questions on KI in the KIMBA quiz.

Science Station – KIMBA on a science tour through German railway stations

If you are not on board MS Wissenschaft, you can change to the train or rather to the train stations. The »ScienceStation«, also initiated as part of the Year of Science in cooperation with Deutsche Bahn, brings research to the station. This year, the mobile exhibition will tour Germany’s railway stations from 24 April to 26 September with several interactive stations on the subject of AI, including the KIMBA AI quiz. With a combination of interactive experiments and background information, it appeals to children, young people and adults alike.
