ICML 2021: Zeitgeist in Natural Language Processing
July 22, 2021
At this year’s ICML conference, the German AI centers came together with international partners for a social event on Natural Language Processing (NLP). The event “Zeitgeist in NLP” on July 21 included a panel and audience discussion, presentations, topical tables, as well as opportunities for networking and exchange and was organized by the coordination office of the German AI network.
The International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) is the leading academic conference on Machine Learning (ML). The German Centers for Artificial Intelligence (AI) participated in this year’s conference with the social event “Zeitgeist in NLP” on Natural Language Processing. The event was organized by the coordination office of the German AI network, which is headed by ML2R co-speaker Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik and located at TU Dortmund University.
Leading Experts discuss the Future of Natural Language Processing
In a panel, representatives of the German AI centers discussed the social and ethical implications and developments of Natural Language Processing together with international experts from John Hopkins University, the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, and Microsoft Research. Among other things, they addressed aspects of sustainability, inclusion, fairness, explainability, and democratization.
At two topical tables, the participants also entered into an exchange with scientists from the AI centers. ML2R hosted the topical table “Smart Hospital”. AI technologies offer great potential for improved patient care and more efficient hospital processes. ML2R scientists are conducting research on NLP models for the analysis and processing of patient documents. The aim is to reduce the documentation workload for healthcare professionals by means of automatically generated discharge letters.
