A center-wide Science Code Slam marked the end of 2021 at ML2R. The researchers of the Competence Center worked in virtual topic groups on a variety of questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. The ML2R team actively promotes forward-looking AI research in the Rhine and Ruhr region.

The virtual ML2R Autumn School 2021 from October 4th to 8th was dedicated to the industry-relevant “Bin Packing”. In addition to lectures, a Design Thinking workshop, and social events, the participants worked in small groups on a concrete Bin Packing problem and developed Machine Learning solutions for it.
Dr. Tiansi Dong is the lead organizer of a Dagstuhl seminar from September 5th to 10th. With participation from interdisciplinary experts from around the world, the seminar “Structure and Learning” aims to develop a roadmap that integratively brings together structure and learning in the fields of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
Lukas Heppe (ML2R) and Mirko Bunse (SFB 876) took second place in the Ariel Machine Learning Data Challenge at the ECML PKDD 2021 conference. The researchers developed a Deep Learning approach that allows for accurate predictions of the radii of extrasolar planets. ML2R scientists study the machine analysis and processing of large astrophysical data sets.
The German AI centers came together at a social event on Natural Language Processing at this year’s ICML conference. The event “Zeitgeist in NLP” on July 21 included a panel and audience discussion, presentations, topical tables, and opportunities for networking and exchange.
The new booklet “AI in SMEs: Recognizing potentials, laying foundations, mastering transformations” by the Plattform Lernende Systeme shows the potentials of Artificial Intelligence for SMEs on the basis of 17 detailed Use Cases. ML2R contributes to the brochure with a project on intelligent data summaries in rolling mills.
At the Digital Day 2021, ML2R and RapidMiner host a Hands-On Workshop on “Machine Learning: An Introduction to the Key Technology of Artificial Intelligence”. On 18 June from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CEST participants will gain exciting insights into the basics of Machine Learning and will execute a typical ML-workflow. Registration for the event is free of charge.
Researchers from the ML2R network are among the “Most Influential Scholars” in the annual ranking of the online e-magazine AI 2000. Using computer algorithms, the AMiner system generates rankings based on citation frequencies in the most important publications for more than 250,000 renowned scientists.
