ML2R supports the initiative #SheTransformsIT
February 02, 2021
#SheTransformsIT is dedicated to empowering women and girls in IT and aims to increase their participation in shaping the societal process of digitization. As one of the first 50 signatories, ML2R spokesperson Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik supports the initiative, which unites renowned representatives from research, politics, business and society. The Competence Center ML2R promotes the next generation of female researchers and educates them to become leading experts in the field of Machine Learning.
“Computer science is not the operation of computers, but the art of abstraction. It is largely concerned with design and (interdisciplinary) communication and is thus an ideal subject for women – if we transform it accordingly within jobs and everyday lives!”
– Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, ML2R spokesperson
ML2R spokesperson Katharina Morik is among the first 50 signatories of #SheTransformsIT. The initiative, which was presented at the Digital Summit 2020, works toward strengthening women’s role in participating in and shaping the process of digitization as well as the IT sector. #SheTransformsIT is committed to creating inclusive and highly networked opportunities for girls and women in education, science, business, media and politics, and to make female role models visible.
The Competence Center ML2R actively promotes female researchers in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. For this purpose, it has established a constructive and supportive work environment, which is continuously developed further, for its students, PhD students, Postdocs and professors. Women are encouraged to shape their roles and careers in computer science. Dr. Helena Kotthaus, scientist and coordinator of the research area Machine Learning with Restricted Resources at the ML2R, says:
“Many milestones in STEM research can be attributed to outstanding women in the field. In order to inspire girls at a young age to take up careers and research in the IT sector, role models must be communicated more extensively in order to overcome stereotypes.”
– Dr. Helena Kotthaus, Scientist at the ML2R
Helena Kotthaus herself took part in TU Dortmund University’s “mentoring3” program for scientific career planning and development, which is targeted at young female researchers. She details her experiences in a TU Dortmund spotlight article (in German): “Without these experiences I would not have stayed in science”
Would you like to shape the future of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning? The Competence Center ML2R accepts applications from interested individuals of any gender or gender identity year-round. Become part of the ML2R and apply now!
