NeurIPS 2020: A Decemberfest on Trustworthy AI Research
December 16, 2020
“A Decemberfest on Trustworthy AI Research” was celebrated by the Network of National Centres of Excellence for AI Research at the NeurIPS international conference. The social event, which took place on December 8, included keynote speeches, a high-level panel discussion, and the opportunity for convivial thematic exchange. The coordination office of the Network of German AI Competence Centers, headed by Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, organized the event in cooperation with Dr. Hendrik Strobelt (IBM Research).
More than 100 researchers participated in the social event “A Decemberfest on Trustworthy AI Research” which was organized by the Network of National Centres of Excellence for AI Research and co-led by the ML2R. The event was held as part of the “Neural Information Processing Systems Online Conference 2020” (NeurIPS 2020). The NeurIPS conference provides a forum for the exchange of the international research community on neural information processing systems and their biological, physical, mathematical, and computational applications.
Together with international partners: German Competence Centers lead research efforts on trustworthy AI technologies
After a greeting by Dr. Hendrik Strobelt (IBM Research), Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, ML2R spokesperson and coordinator of the network, presented the network of German AI Competence Centers. In subsequent presentations, high-ranking representatives of the Competence Centers together with international partners presented the latest research results on trustworthy AI technologies. Speakers for the ML2R were spokesperson Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel and Prof. Dr. Bertrand Braunschweig, former coordinator of the French national research programme on Artifical Intelligence.
How can Artificial Intelligence be designed and communicated in a trustworthy manner for the benefit of society? Do science, industry, and society collaborate effectively to further trust in Machine Learning? The speakers discussed these and further questions in a panel discussion with the moderation being conducted by Reinhard Karger (DFKI).
Representatives from industry emphasize interest in certified ML
The event concluded with a social exchange between the researchers in a virtual meeting space. Participants from all over the world entered into a dialog and networked at various topical tables. ML2R researchers hereby spoke about the certification of Machine Learning (ML) methods and held lively discussions with representatives from industry.
Machine Learning certification offers great potential for companies, as it allows for a high degree of standardization and reliability and increases the trust of users in ML technologies. Within the Competence Center ML2R, scientists are conducting research in several projects on holistic ML certification, which encompasses all steps of Machine Learning processes.
