Competence Center ML2R becomes the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
01.07.2022
As the newly founded Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, the Competence Center Rhine-Ruhr Machine Learning (ML2R) will transition to long-term institutional funding, provided by the federal government and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), as of July 1, 2022. As a new international AI center of excellence with locations in Dortmund, Bonn and Sankt Augustin, the Lamarr Institute focuses on the value-based research and development of high-performance, trustworthy as well as resource-efficient Artificial Intelligence (AI).
After a successful evaluation by an international panel of experts, the Lamarr Institute emerges from the previous competence center ML2R, which through the funding will be consolidated and expanded. The Lamarr Institute is constituted by pioneering research institutions in Germany, TU Dortmund University, the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University of Bonn and the Fraunhofer Institutes for Intelligent Analysis and Information Systems IAIS in Sankt Augustin and for Material Flow and Logistics IML in Dortmund. Together, they establish a profile of excellent research and application that is unique in the German AI landscape:
“Through its unique combination of leading Artificial Intelligence research and innovative application, the Lamarr Institute addresses the fundamental questions of our time. By making Machine Learning resource-efficient and implementing and certifying trustworthy AI technologies in companies, Lamarr researchers are setting international standards for innovation technologies and make top AI research from NRW visible beyond state borders. The institutional and expanded funding creates an ideal, long-term framework for this work.”
– Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel, Co-Director of the Lamarr Institute
Leading International AI Research: High-Performing. Trustworthy. Sustainable.
The Lamarr Institute is headed by Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel, Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, Prof. Dr. Christian Bauckhage and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Michael ten Hompel. Under their leadership, the Lamarr researchers investigate how algorithms, models and applications need to be designed in order to deliver more powerful yet reliable trustworthy results. Certification measures ensure that AI systems are used responsibly and assist humans appropriately in a wide range of applications. All research activities are based on the central paradigm of “Triangular AI” (AI3):
“The Lamarr Institute stands for ‘Triangular AI’ – a new, high-performance generation of Artificial Intelligence that is not only trained on data, but also uses additional knowledge and contextual information. In doing so, we direct our research focus on Machine Learning in a way that software and hardware operate in a sustainable and resource-efficient manner.”
– Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, Co-Director of the Lamarr Institute
From Innovation to Application. For the Future of European AI.
Companies benefit from the direct transfer of Lamarr research results into application – from innovative ML technologies to establishing safeguarding processes for AI systems to co-working with Lamarr researchers. Education and training is an important pillar of Lamarr’s work and includes educational offers for school children, students, young scientists as well as employees. Ethical standards, equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion are the guiding principles of our research. Naming the institute after inventor Hedy Lamarr underlines our commitment to advancing women, especially in computer science and other scientific and technical fields.

AI Competence Centers receive Long-Term Funding
The Lamarr Institute is one of five German AI competence centers that were previously funded as projects and will now receive permanent, institutional funding from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the participating German states. Together with the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Berlin Institute for the Foundations of Learning and Data (BIFOLD), the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Dresden/Leipzig (ScaDS.AI Dresden/Leipzig), the Munich Center for Machine Learning (MCML), the Tübingen AI Center (TUE.AI) and the Lamarr Institute for Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence form the nucleus of German AI research. With the continuation of the AI competence centers and building on the successes of recent years, the German government carries on its national strategy for Artificial Intelligence adopted in 2018.
